Used Electric Cars in Etah: Tata Tiago EV Long-Term Review (2026)

Pre-owned electric vehicles are still a small slice of our showroom inventory in Etah, but interest is growing fast — especially from buyers who do predictable daily commutes within 80 km. To answer the question properly instead of repeating brochure claims, we have run a Tata Tiago EV XT (24 kWh) as a showroom errand car for the last 18 months. This is the unfiltered verdict — what works, what does not, and whether you should put your money into a used EV in 2026 or wait another year.
The car: Tata Tiago EV XT (24 kWh)
Our long-term car is a 2023 Tata Tiago EV XT with the larger 24 kWh battery pack, finished in Daytona Grey, currently with 21,400 km on the odometer. We bought it secondhand from a private owner in Aligarh at ₹6.8 lakh — roughly ₹2 lakh below the on-road price when new. Battery health certificate at purchase showed 97% state-of-health.
Real-world range
Claimed ARAI range is 250 km. The real-world numbers we have measured across seasons:
- Cool weather (15–25°C), AC off, mostly 60 km/h cruising: 220–235 km.
- Cool weather, AC on, mixed city + highway: 200–215 km.
- Summer (40°C+), AC at 22°C, Etah city traffic: 175–190 km.
- Loaded with 4 adults and luggage, AC on, highway: 165–180 km.
- Winter (5–10°C), heater on, short trips with cold starts: 160–175 km (battery cold-soak penalty).
Treat 180 km as your reliable working range across all conditions. Plan trips around that number, not the claimed figure, and you will never run out of charge.
Charging infrastructure in Etah
We charge primarily at the showroom via a 7.2 kW AC wallbox — 0% to 100% takes roughly 4.5 hours overnight. A 15A home socket using the bundled portable charger takes 11–15 hours for the same fill, which is fine if you plug in every evening.
Highway DC fast chargers along the Etah–Agra (NH-93) and Etah–Kanpur stretches are growing — Tata Power, Statiq and Jio-BP have all added stations in the last 12 months. A 50 kW DC fast charger takes the Tiago EV from 10% to 80% in about 60 minutes. For a planned trip to Agra (110 km one-way), we charge to 90% before leaving, drive there comfortably, and DC fast-charge for 40 minutes during lunch for the return leg.
Battery health after 18 months
Independent state-of-health check at 21,000 km shows 95% — a 2 percentage point drop over 18 months and 16,000 km of additional driving. That puts the pack on track to retain over 85% at the 8-year warranty mark. Tata's 8-year / 1.6 lakh km battery warranty also transfers to the second owner with paperwork — this is a huge confidence factor when buying used.
Running cost in rupees per km
On home charging at ₹8/unit residential tariff, our cost works out to roughly ₹0.95 per km. On DC fast charging at ₹18/unit, the cost rises to about ₹2.15 per km — still less than half a petrol hatch. For comparison, a petrol Tiago at 18 km/l on ₹100/litre fuel runs at ₹5.55 per km, and a petrol Brezza or Nexon at 14 km/l runs at ₹7.10 per km.
Over 15,000 km/year of mostly home charging, you save approximately ₹68,000–₹85,000 in fuel alone compared to a petrol equivalent. Over a 5-year ownership window, that is ₹3.5 lakh — easily covering the higher upfront price of the EV when bought new, and pure savings when bought used.
Service and maintenance
Annual service interval is 12 months or 15,000 km. The work is largely an inspection — no engine oil, no spark plugs, no clutch, no timing belt. Brake pads last 2–3x longer than petrol cars because regen braking does most of the slowing. Our 18-month service cost: ₹4,200. A petrol Tiago over the same period would cost ₹11,000–₹14,000.
What's not great about used EVs in 2026
- Resale is still establishing — depreciation curves are less predictable than ICE cars.
- Highway long-distance is doable but requires planning. If you do 200+ km daily, an EV is not the right car yet for rural UP.
- Insurance is slightly higher than equivalent petrol model (battery replacement coverage adds 8–12%).
- Independent EV service mechanics in Etah are still rare — most work has to go to a Tata authorised centre.
- Used EV market is small. We see only 4–6 listings per month within 100 km of Etah.
Other used EVs worth considering in 2026
Beyond the Tiago EV, used Tata Nexon EV (30.2 kWh and 40.5 kWh packs), MG ZS EV, and Mahindra XUV400 EV are starting to show up. Nexon EV is the most family-practical and has the best DC fast-charge network coverage. ZS EV offers premium feel but service network is limited outside metros.
Who should consider a used EV today?
Daily drivers doing 30–80 km within Etah and nearby towns, with home parking and a 16A plug or 7.2 kW wallbox nearby. Second cars in households where a petrol vehicle handles long trips. Buyers who keep cars for 5+ years and want lowest-possible running cost. If your trips are routinely 200 km+ highway runs with tight schedules, stay with a petrol or diesel for another year or two until DC fast-charge density doubles.
Inspection checklist for a used EV
- Demand a printed battery state-of-health certificate from the manufacturer's diagnostic tool.
- Confirm 8-year battery warranty is intact and transferable.
- Test charge from 20% to 80% — note time taken on AC and (if possible) DC.
- Check 12V auxiliary battery — the small one that runs lights and infotainment. Replacement is ₹4,500.
- Confirm portable charger and any wallbox accessories are included with the sale.
- Run a full diagnostic at a Tata authorised service centre — usually free for the buyer.

Charging at home in Etah — what you actually need
Most Etah houses have 3-phase power available at the meter, even if the internal wiring is single-phase. To install a 7.2 kW AC wallbox, you need a dedicated 32A MCB on a single-phase 230V line, properly earthed, with a 6 sq mm copper feed from the meter to the parking spot. A licensed electrician can complete the installation in half a day for ₹6,000–₹9,000 including the wallbox unit. If your parking is more than 15 metres from the meter, plan for a slightly thicker cable. Avoid running an extension cord from a 15A socket for daily charging — the connector overheats over months of use and fails dangerously. The bundled portable charger is fine for occasional top-ups, not daily duty.
Insurance considerations specific to used EVs
Comprehensive insurance for a used EV in Etah costs 8–12% more than for an equivalent petrol car, primarily because of the battery-pack replacement coverage. Add the zero-depreciation rider for cars under 5 years old (₹2,500–₹4,000 extra) and confirm the policy explicitly covers the high-voltage battery pack and traction motor — some entry-level comprehensive policies exclude these. Also ask about "new-for-old" cover for the battery in case of accident damage in the first 3 years. Tata Motors' own warranty extension can be purchased on transfer for ₹15,000–₹20,000 and covers the motor controller and onboard charger for 2 additional years — well worth it on a 3–4 year old used Tiago EV.
Resale outlook for used EVs in 2026–2028
Used EV resale is the single biggest variable nobody can predict perfectly. Today, a 3-year-old Tiago EV retains roughly 55–60% of its original value — lower than an equivalent petrol Tiago at 70%. As the new-EV market matures and battery prices fall, used EV depreciation could either deepen (newer-better packs arrive at lower prices) or shallow (charging infrastructure matures and demand catches up). Our cautious working assumption: budget for 50% resale on a 4-year-old used EV bought today, sold three years later. The lower upfront price of a used EV plus the ₹3 lakh in fuel savings over those three years means the net cost of ownership is still meaningfully lower than petrol — but go in with eyes open.
Should first-time car buyers consider a used EV?
For tech-comfortable first-time buyers with a fixed daily commute under 80 km, parking with power access, and no immediate need for highway long-distance use — yes, a used Tiago EV or Nexon EV makes excellent sense. It is the cheapest car in India to actually run, the cabin is more refined than the petrol equivalent, and the regen-braking driving style is naturally smoother. For first-time buyers without home parking or with frequent long-distance trips, stick with a proven petrol option from our best used cars under ₹5 lakh in Etah shortlist.
Frequently asked questions
Is the battery warranty valid for a second owner?
Yes. Tata's 8-year / 1.6 lakh km battery warranty transfers to the new owner when ownership is registered with Tata Motors.
Can I charge a Tata Tiago EV at a normal home plug?
Yes, via the bundled 15A charger — 0 to 100% takes about 12–15 hours. A 7.2 kW wallbox is strongly recommended for faster top-ups.
What is the realistic range of a used Tiago EV?
180–220 km depending on weather, AC use and driving style. Plan trips around 180 km to be safe.
How much does it cost to replace an EV battery out of warranty?
Currently ₹4–5 lakh for the Tiago EV pack. Costs are dropping fast — expected to halve within 5 years.
Are there enough fast chargers around Etah?
Growing fast. Etah–Agra and Etah–Kanpur highways have DC fast chargers at most fuel stations now. Urban Etah has at least 3 public AC chargers.
